Librarian Sonia Spindt Sharing a love of books with our kids is librarian Sonia Spindt. Sonia is proud of Peralta’s library. “It provides a place for students to have access to a large number of books, and it’s a comfortable place to read,” she says. “The library supports reading and literacy, and it emphasizes that we love books.”
Many classrooms visit the library each week, and students can check out books. Additionally, Sonia keeps the library open at lunch, as an alternative to the playground.
Like many staff members at Peralta, Sonia fills many roles. She also works on the Title I and program, runs the math Olympics, and oversees the book fairs.
“This is just a remarkable, wonderful school,” says Sonia. She should know – her 3 sons graduated from Peralta, although that was a while ago. (Her oldest is now 35 years old!) She says Peralta gave them a strong educational foundation, which helped as one is now a law professor, another a researcher, and the third an attorney.
Sonia’s work in the library is one of the many programs made possible by donations to the Peralta Fund!
How to donate:
Many families choose to donate online (http://peraltaschool.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7c1e8ec8a4cc5f87a6964cac9&id=c233d58a06&e=453c95996e) , where you can set up automatic monthly payments or do a one-time donation.
Or bring your check (payable to ‘PPTG’) to the office at Peralta. There's a box for the Peralta Fund above the teacher mailboxes.

TELEGRAPH AVENUE COMPLETE STREET IMPLEMENTATION PLAN
From Jamie Parks, AICP
It has been a few months since I've sent an update on the Telegraph Avenue Complete Street Implementation Plan, but City staff have been working hard to take all the feedback we heard and develop a single set of recommendations. The City will share our DRAFT recommendations for Telegraph Avenue at two public open houses in September:
· Saturday, September 13, 10am-12pm; Gogi Time Banquet Room (2600 Telegraph)
The purpose of these meetings will be to (1) show draft concepts and plans to make Telegraph Avenue a safer street for travel by all roadway users and (2) solicit feedback and comments that can be incorporated into the final plan. Both meetings will cover the same material, so hopefully at least one of the times works for you.
The draft plan is currently in final review, and will be posted to the project website (www.oaklandnet.com/TelegraphAvenue) in the next couple weeks in advance of the open houses. I will send another announcement when additional materials are posted.
In the meantime, we will begin distributing flyers and otherwise raising awareness for the events. Please help by forwarding this announcement to your friends and colleagues as appropriate. As always, please contact me if you have any questions the project, and thank you for your continued interest in a better Telegraph!
The Peralta Broadcast attempts to go out weekly during the school year. If you have any school or class announcements, or interesting community events you'd like to share with the Peralta family, please email or forward the information to Catherine Kelly at this address (mailto:peraltabroadcast@peraltaschool.org?subject=Peralta%20Broadcast) .
